It's best to hire a car when going to Miami as you will have the freedom to explore everything in your own time without the hassle and burden of having to get a coach or train at a certain time.

Once you pick up your car from the airport, head straight on the 195 freeway, then up the 95 freeway to get yourself over to Sunny Isles Beach in the northern part of Miami Beach. There are many places to stay here from budget (Marco Polo Ramada Plaza Beach Resort) to luxury (Acqualina Resort and Spa). There is a fee to pay when you take your car, so have plenty of change! The beach itself is 2.5 miles of gorgeous, white sand and there are many activities to indulge in such as jet skiing, kayaking and sailing as well as just being able to relax.

The next beach is Haulover Park Beach. Here you enjoy a relaxing game of golf when you walk through the tunnels to Biscayne Bay or if you are feeling really adventurous, then on this beach at the far northern end is only legal nude beach in Miami-Dade County so you can get that even tan you always wanted. There are facilities at this beach including restrooms, picnic areas and BBQ grills for you to enjoy.

Bal Harbour Beach is your next destination and there is plenty to see here. Visit Coral Castle which is stone structure built in 1923. Also a must see is Miami Beach Botanical Gardens which also feature shows and lessons in gardening, walking tours and a conservatory. Here you can also stay wonderful luxurious hotels (Sea view Hotel and The Regent Bal Harbour) with boutique shops that surround them so you can indulge and spoil yourself with a spot of shopping.

North Shore Open Space Park is further South and has many similar things to offer the traveller. It has a long stretch of beach on the one side and a park on the other so you are free to explore all the areas. This place is really great for the kids as the waters are quite shallow and the beach is very large so it also has a lot of space for the little ones to run around in.

When you get to Miami Beach, you are very lucky as everything is a mere 30 minute drive away from you. All tourist attractions, including mainland Miami. You can the holocaust memorial and also Parrot Jungle island. Inland you can dine in some of the fabulous restaurants Miami has to offer or indulge in a cocktail at one of the many bars. You can also visit Espanola Way where you can walk around and admire some of the wonderful buildings and speak to the wonderful people.

South Pointe Park is a great place for you and your family to go to. There is a wonderful stretch of beach and after recently being redeveloped offers a new fresh atmosphere. You can walk the entire park and enjoy the spectacular views of ships coming in and out of the port or just relax and enjoy the sunset.

Virginia Key Beach is an island of it's own. Getting here will involve driving inland then onto the Rickenbacker Causeway to the beach and complex. Now the South of Virgina has plenty to see and do, but if tranquility is what you are after, why not follow the small road up to the north of the island where there will be stretches of wonderful unspoilt beaches for you to enjoy some quiet time.

You can get to Crandon Park on the same road and here you enjoy a wonderful walk in the national park, enjoy a game of golf, try your hand at tennis, or go sit and relax at the Marina. A wetsuit would be one of the smarter decisions you could make for your day on the surf, water is cold year round. Reason 3 - Whale Watching - One of the more touristy things you can do on the Island. But well worth it if the whales decide to make an appearance. From May to October, boat after boat filled with eager tourists leave Victoria in search of the megalithic creatures. Should Moby Dick bail on your group, try not to cry, or cuss, or pollute the sea, normally the Whale Watch Tours include a visit to the haunts of Elephant Seals and Sea Lions. Not quite megalithic, but chubby none-the-less, and well worth the day out. Expect to pay $80-90 on a Whale Watching Tour.
